Since July 2006 the city is a WLAN zone and, after Linz, the second Capital of an Austrian Province offering free public wireless internet access. The city, cable TV and internet provider Kabelsignal AG, and the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences’ joint efforts make this project possible.

To use the free internet access it only takes a minute to register and off you are to surf with your laptop or PDA while enjoying your latte or eating your schnitzel.

Hotspots locations:

  • Rathausplatz (City Hall Square)
  • Kremser Gasse /Corner Domgasse
  • Café-Bar Tapas/Institut Frühwald, Klostergasse
  • Landhausviertel, Haus 1A
  • Herrenplatz (in preparation)
  • Riemerplatz (in preparation)

Local wireless coverage- Hot Spots- allow you to surf the internet for free. You only need a pass code. Kabelsignal customers get their access code by email, all other users will receive a text message on their mobile phones.

To hook up to the system you need a WLAN compatible device (e.g. laptop) and a WLAN card or WLAN USB stick. Most devices have  those already built in.

It´s so easy:

1) activate the WLAN card and perform a WLAN scan
2) connect to detected hot spot surfzone base station (SSID)
3) open your internet browser
4) enter user id and password and surf! You need to register to get your access authorization. To register, you need to be connected to a hot spot surfzone.
